What is Epoxy Terrazzo Flooring?

• An Epoxy Resin Matrix is a 2-component resin which bonds directly to the concrete slab.
• The advantages of this material over cementitious terrazzo include an almost endless color selection.
• Other advantages include lighter weight, higher strengths with PSI rates of 10,000 +, faster installations, impermeable finish and less susceptible to cracking.
• A disadvantage of epoxy terrazzo that it is only for interior and not exterior applications.
• Epoxy terrazzo topping is not vapor-permeable so moisture mitigations products may be needed. If an old building does not have an active vapor barrier under the slab on grade, epoxy terrazzo should not be installed.

Care and maintenance of epoxy terrazzo floors ?

Because epoxy terrazzo surfaces are smooth, seamless, and nonporous, they are very easy to clean and won't harbor the growth of mold or mildew. They also resist staining caused by chemical, oil, and grease spills. Most manufacturers recommend simply washing the surface with a neutral cleaner, followed by rinsing. In high-traffic areas, the surface should be protected by at least two coats of acrylic or urethane sealer to reduce wear.

Where can I use terrazzo?

Terrazzo is used in both interior and exterior applications. Portland Cement and Polyacrylate Matrix Terrazzo can be used for both interior and exterior applications, however. Epoxy Resin Matrix Terrazzo is not recommended for exterior use.
When optimum slip-resistance is desired for an exterior Terrazzo surface, Rustic or Acid Washed Portland Cement Terrazzo can be used. After grinding and before final polishing and sealing, a mild acid solution is applied t hat will dissolve the Portland Cement matrix until neutralized. This process leaves a slight depression in the matrix causing the marble chip surface to protrude slightly and provide the added slip-resistance. Upon final sealing, the Terrazzo appearance is similar to polished Terrazzo without high gloss.

Is terrazzo better than porcelain or ceramic tiles for a kitchen or bathroom?

Whether terrazzo is better than porcelain or ceramic tiles for a kitchen or bathroom floor depends on your design preference. Terrazzo can last a long time but so can a properly installed ceramic tile floor. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the life span of a ceramic tile floor is 75 to 100 years, similar to terrazzo.

How is terrazzo made?

Terrazzo is made by mixing an aggregate like glass or stone with a binder like cement or epoxy. The mix is made and poured into the prepared space you designate. Alternatively, you can purchase prefabricated terrazzo tiles, which consist of similar materials. They’re poured into a mold and cured before installation.

What is epoxy floor

Epoxy flooring is basically a protective floor coating applied to concrete surfaces. The epoxy is made up of a tinted resin and hardener that are mixed to create a durable, rigid coating that can be roller or squeegee applied.

How Much Does Epoxy Flooring Cost?

Material supply and installation cost considerations will vary depending on size, design, layout and type of epoxy flooring. Total lifecycle costs are usually advantageous for epoxy floors due to their low maintenance combined with longevity and durability.
As project costs vary on a case-by-case basis, Flowcrete works with approved applicators to provide accurate project quotations.

What maintenance do epoxy floors need?

If you can keep the floor clean it will last longer. Less grit and stones mean it will suffer less from scratching.

- Due to sanitary requirements, the epoxy floor is very well considered as flooring in food companies as well as kitchens. Likewise, it is very common in pharmaceutical laboratories and hospital plants.

- The epoxy resin floor is also highly appreciated for its chemical protection. In this respect, it is a floor covering that is constantly used in food companies that are exposed on a daily basis to spillage of fruit juices, lactic acid, blood, etc. This protection extends to spillage of aggressive liquids, which is why the epoxy floor is ideal for laboratories and warehouses.

- The clean, aseptic aesthetics of an epoxy floor have boosted its use in automotive workshops, car parks and garages. As well as any type of factory or warehouse in general.

- The aesthetic perspective should not be lost, as an epoxy resin floor is still a decorative coating despite being more introduced in the industrial field. An epoxy floor that is perfect for offices, commercial premises and homes.

What Is Polyurethane?

It's a kind of super-tough varnish formulated so that its microscopic chains of resin molecules will bond tightly with one another as it dries. The result is a finish that's much more resistant to water, solvents, abrasion, and impacts than traditional varnishes.

What Does Polyurethane Coating Do?

Polyurethane coating is typically used as a finisher for wood floors to provide them with a glossy shine. It comes in two varieties -- oil based and water based. Water based polyurethane coating costs more than oil based, but it's also slightly less toxic. Though the effects of polyurethane coatings can be long lasting and provide visual improvements to the surface, it's also known to have toxic side effects.
