What is Epoxy Terrazzo Flooring?

• An Epoxy Resin Matrix is a 2-component resin which bonds directly to the concrete slab.
• The advantages of this material over cementitious terrazzo include an almost endless color selection.
• Other advantages include lighter weight, higher strengths with PSI rates of 10,000 +, faster installations, impermeable finish and less susceptible to cracking.
• A disadvantage of epoxy terrazzo that it is only for interior and not exterior applications.
• Epoxy terrazzo topping is not vapor-permeable so moisture mitigations products may be needed. If an old building does not have an active vapor barrier under the slab on grade, epoxy terrazzo should not be installed.

Care and maintenance of epoxy terrazzo floors ?

Because epoxy terrazzo surfaces are smooth, seamless, and nonporous, they are very easy to clean and won't harbor the growth of mold or mildew. They also resist staining caused by chemical, oil, and grease spills. Most manufacturers recommend simply washing the surface with a neutral cleaner, followed by rinsing. In high-traffic areas, the surface should be protected by at least two coats of acrylic or urethane sealer to reduce wear.

Where can I use terrazzo?

Terrazzo is used in both interior and exterior applications. Portland Cement and Polyacrylate Matrix Terrazzo can be used for both interior and exterior applications, however. Epoxy Resin Matrix Terrazzo is not recommended for exterior use.
When optimum slip-resistance is desired for an exterior Terrazzo surface, Rustic or Acid Washed Portland Cement Terrazzo can be used. After grinding and before final polishing and sealing, a mild acid solution is applied t hat will dissolve the Portland Cement matrix until neutralized. This process leaves a slight depression in the matrix causing the marble chip surface to protrude slightly and provide the added slip-resistance. Upon final sealing, the Terrazzo appearance is similar to polished Terrazzo without high gloss.

Is terrazzo better than porcelain or ceramic tiles for a kitchen or bathroom?

Whether terrazzo is better than porcelain or ceramic tiles for a kitchen or bathroom floor depends on your design preference. Terrazzo can last a long time but so can a properly installed ceramic tile floor. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the life span of a ceramic tile floor is 75 to 100 years, similar to terrazzo.

How is terrazzo made?

Terrazzo is made by mixing an aggregate like glass or stone with a binder like cement or epoxy. The mix is made and poured into the prepared space you designate. Alternatively, you can purchase prefabricated terrazzo tiles, which consist of similar materials. They’re poured into a mold and cured before installation.
